Frequently Asked Questions

The fourth trimester refers to the first 12 weeks after childbirth. It is a critical period for a new mother’s physical recovery, mental well-being, and adjustment to caring for a newborn. It is often overlooked but essential for long-term health.

While most expectant parents focus on pregnancy and childbirth, many are unprepared for postpartum challenges. This period is vital for healing, hormonal changes, breastfeeding, and mental health. Proper support can help mothers transition smoothly.

Dr. Annaleeza Caputi ND emphasizes three main pillars:

Nutrition and Meal Planning – Adequate caloric intake, protein-rich meals, and easy meal prep strategies.

Building a Support System – Establishing connections with mental health professionals, physiotherapists, and holistic healthcare providers.

Postpartum Lab Work & Health Monitoring – Checking iron, vitamin D, B12, blood sugar levels, and thyroid function.

Dr. Annaleeza recommends assessing:

Iron levels (to prevent fatigue and anemia)

Vitamin D & B12 (for energy and immune function)

Blood sugar levels (to monitor postpartum metabolic changes)

Thyroid function (as thyroid issues can impact mood and energy)

Engage in daily gentle movement (20–30 minutes of walking)

Do pelvic floor exercises to strengthen muscles

Work with a pelvic floor physiotherapist to improve recovery

Seek additional therapies like osteopathy, massage therapy, or naturopathic care

Protein sources: Hard-boiled eggs, hemp hearts, high-protein Greek yogurt

Healthy fats: Nuts, seeds, avocado, olive oil

Fiber sources: Flaxseeds, chia seeds, leafy greens (support gut health)

Antioxidants: Dark leafy greens and berries (support immune function)

Batch cooking & freezing meals before delivery

Requesting meal plan gift cards as baby registry gifts

Including nutrient-dense, easy-to-eat snacks like protein bars and yogurt

Postpartum anxiety and depression are common but often overlooked. Symptoms can include mood swings, excessive worry, fatigue, and feelings of sadness or detachment.

Using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale during pregnancy and postpartum can help identify at-risk mothers early.

Seeking maternal mental health therapists before birth for continued support

Joining mom support groups & community networks

Utilizing naturopathic treatments like herbal remedies and nutritional support

Combining conventional and holistic approaches for better emotional balance
